Nous en sommes arrivés finalement à la pause du match des étoiles après avoir visité 6 stades depuis le début du voyage. Effectivement, nous sommes en retard d’un stade (Nationals Park). Donc, notre itinéraire à dû changer : retour à Washington, puis descente vers la Floride et remontée vers Atlanta avant d’aller visiter la Nouvelle-Orléans et de commencer notre périple vers l’ouest.

 

Qu’avons-nous appris depuis notre départ? Nous avons visité des équipes de baseball qui, malgré leur fiche très ordinaire, réussissent à attirer assez de spectateurs aux matchs. Bref, ce fut notre premier constat : comment apprendre à vivre avec une équipe perdante lorsque celle-ci doit jouer 81 matchs à domicile lors d’une saison (nous avons bien hâte de parler avec les fans des Cubs!). Nous pouvons classer les équipes que nous avons visitées en deux groupes. D’abord, les équipes qui ont une équipe avec une histoire tellement riche que leur partisans viendront toujours remplir les gradins. Ensuite, les équipes qui réussissent à offrir une expérience baseball assez intéressante que, même lorsque l’équipe perd, les fans viendront au match pour expérimentée celle-ci : stade particulier, activités avant ou après le match, promotions, etc.

Pour notre projet qui est de faire la promotion du retour du baseball à Montréal, notre idée est très bien reçue. On doit dire que le nord-est connait assez bien Montréal compte tenue de la proximité et des rivalités qui existent déjà au hockey (Flyers, Rangers et Bruins). Les gens souhaitent le retour du baseball à Montréal car tout le monde semble avoir un beau souvenir concernant les Expos. Des partisans nous ont raconté leur visite au « Big O » et d’autres nous parlent encore de 1994.

Nous expliquons au gens que le plus gros du travail est la construction d’un nouveau stade à Montréal et surtout de convaincre les gens à Montréal… Plusieurs personnes nous parlent d’équipe (s) dont les jours sont comptés. Nous ne voulons pas voler l’équipe d’une ville, car nous ne  souhaitons à aucun fan de baseball de vivre ce que nous avons vécu en 2004. Deux nouvelles équipes pourraient donner un chiffre pair dans la  division nationale et américaine.

Entre temps, nous profitons bien du voyage. C’est un privilège de faire le tour des États-Unis puis  de voir les différentes villes et cultures qu’on y trouve. Mais pour moi, le plus beau moment et celui où nous conduisons ou marchons vers un stade de baseball et que l’un de nous aperçois les lumières du stade et dit : On y est, il est là! Quel beau moment!

We left Baltimore to go back to Pennsylvania and the city of brotherly love: Philadelphia. We only had a few hours to visit Philadelphia but we took the time to see the historic old town and its attractions. Renown for the signature of the declaration of independence and the liberty bell, the city offers a variety of (free!) museums that relates the implication of Philadelphia and its habitants in the path to independence of the United States of America. Free museums and the last days really ease our budget!

 

 

 

We also took the time to go see the contemporary attractions of the city: Reading market (with famous philly cheese steak sandwich), the city hall and the famous LOVE monument. After this visit, we headed to the Citizens bank Park to the Phillies against the Nationals. For those of you that never been to Philadelphia, all the major league teams (Phillies, Eagles, 76ers and Flyers) stadiums and arena are in the same area. This allows you to use the huge parking lots that are used by fans whatever sports event is happening. It is also really great for tailgating! For those of you that are new with that word, tailgating is about eating, drinking and having fun before any sports event but directly from the parking lots surrounding the stadiums. Bring your BBQ, beer, beer pong table, etc. Since it was a Friday night, we got a great tailgate party.

 

 

 

 

We met a bunch of Phillies fans living in the area surrounding Philadelphia. They talked to us about the relation Philadelphia is having with their sports teams. First of all, they were proud to say that they were Philly four fans, fans of all the four major league teams in Philadelphia. They explained us that, even if the team is losing, the fans will show up just for the tailgating or to be with friends sitting at a major league game. Talking about the fans, baseball is in the Philadelphia culture so even with a bad record it’s not too hard to get a decent number of fans at the ballpark. We’d like to give a big shootout to the fans we met: we really had fun with you guys, loved playing boom and hope to hear from you when you’ll be visiting Montreal!

 

 

 

About the stadium, we realized that, apart from the fact that it’s a good location not too far from the city; Citizens Bank Park is really simple. Nothing is really special about it.  Sure the liberty bell illuminates and rings when the Phillies get a home run and you have a nice deck at center field where you get a different experience during the game but the ballpark is not extraordinary. The team doesn’t have a great record so fans were not attending the game in big numbers: some sections where totally empty. Still people were rooting for the team during the whole game. We realized that fans here were mostly between 25 and 40 years old, not too many family and kids were present.

Talking baseball, for a second game we got to see A.J. Burnett as a starting pitcher. He pitched well and got good help from his defense during the whole game. Jordan Zimmermann had more trouble allowing the Phillies to get runs early in the game. He had to leave with a biceps cramp and he will not be playing in the all-star game. Phillies gave a good show to their fans: they knocked two homeruns and they took the win 6-2.

 

 

 

We looked at the end of the game from counters where fans can eat their food because we had a better view down there. We met a couple from Toronto who was also doing a baseball ballparks trip: Fenway, Citizens Bank Park and Camden Yards. Have fun in Baltimore! After the game, we made a quick stop at Xfinity live: a huge sports bar right next to the ballpark. The bar is divided in many sections (pub, dance, vip lounge, restaurant and outside bar) so fans can meet up after Philadelphia major sporting events.

 

 

 

To conclude, we realized in Philadelphia that if the fans in your city are sports fan in general, it’s easy to keep your teams in good shape. Philadelphia is a city that is really proud of its team: a bar was called broad street bullies! Also, by offering the fans huge parking lots where they can tailgate party, you let your fan deciding to have a different experience which makes them come to the games even if the team is struggling.

We are really happy of our experience in Philly and again big thanks to our friends we met during the tailgate! Also we where happy that we met several other persons that wished us a team back in Montreal! We hope to have other tailgating events during the trip!

 

 

We’ll take a break with the baseball team for the all-star game but our next stop will be us going back to Washington on July 18^th!

 

P.S Finally we found someone to do a t-shirt trade! We got a nice Phillies t-shirt and this lucky fan got a brand new expos t-shirt! Wear it proudly!

Nous avons quitté  Baltimore pour retourner en Pennsylvanie dans la ville de l’amour fraternel : Philadelphie. Nous avions peu de temps pour visiter Philadelphie mais nous avons quand même pu profiter des attractions historiques de cette ville. Reconnu pour la signature de la déclaration d’indépendance et pour la ‘’Liberty Bell’’, la ville offre des musées gratuits relatant l’histoire de l’indépendance américaine et du rôle de Philadelphie et de ses habitants dans celle-ci. Encore une fois, les attractions gratuites ont aidé notre budget!

 

Nous avons aussi profité des attractions un peu plus contemporaines comme le Reading Market (philly cheese steak sandwich!), l’hôtel de ville et le fameux ‘’Love’’. Après cette visite, nous nous sommes dirigés vers le Citizens Bank Park pour y voir un match Nationals – Phillies. Pour ceux qui n’ont jamais visité une équipe sportive à Philadelphie, on retrouve les stades et arénas des 4 équipes majeures (Phillies, Eagles, 76ers et Flyers) de la ville au même endroit. Cela permet d’avoir des très grands stationnements qui favorisent une activité bien américaine : le ‘’tailgating’’. Pour les néophytes, le ‘’tailgating’’ consiste à manger, boire et s’amuser avant un évènement sportif directement des stationnements adjacents au stade. Apporter votre BBQ, alcool, jeux de beer pong, etc. Étant un vendredi soir, nous avons eu droit à un bon ‘’tailgate’’!

 

 

 

Nous avons rencontré un groupe de gens qui nous ont expliqué comment les fans de la région de Philadelphie vivaient avec leurs équipes sportives. D’abord, ils sont fiers d’être des Philly four fans (fans des 4 équipes sportives de Philadelphie). Ils nous ont expliqué que les fans, lorsque l’équipe est perdante, vont venir profiter justement du tailgate ou simplement pour être entre amis au stade. De plus, les gens de la région sont fans de baseball et sont simplement heureux de pouvoir regarder des matchs des ligues majeures. Nous remercions beaucoup ces fans qui nous ont offert nourriture et breuvages avant notre entrée dans le stade! Le taigate des Phillies est un évènement que nous recommandons fortement!

 

 

Pour le stade, nous avons trouvé que, malgré qu’il soit très bien situé par rapport à la ville, est très simple. On ne trouve rien d’extrêmement marquant au Citizen Bank Park autre que la liberty bell qui s’illumine et qui résonne lors des coups de circuits des Phillies et une belle terrasse au champ centre qui permet aux fans d’avoir une ambiance plutôt bar\terrasse lorsqu’ils regardent le match. Compte tenu de la fiche de l’équipe, les fans étaient présents mais pas en si grand nombre : quelques sections étaient complètements vides. Nous avons quand même remarqué que les partisans étaient beaucoup dans la tranche d’âge 25-50 ans. Peu d’enfants étaient présents.

Au niveau du baseball, nous avons (encore!) vu A.J Burnett au monticule. Celui-ci a bien fait avec l’aide de sa défensive qui l’a supporté tout au long du  match. Jordan Zimmermann a eu plus de difficultés en laissant les Phillies s’inscrire rapidement au pointage. Il a dû quitter le match en raison d’une crampe au biceps et il ne jouera pas au match des étoiles. Les Phillies ont cogné 2 coups de circuits et ont fait plaisir à leurs fans avec une victoire de 6-2.

 

 

Nous avons regardé la fin du match debout un peu plus bas accotés sur les comptoirs permettant aux fans de manger car nous avions une meilleure vue qu’à nos sièges. Nous avons rencontré un couple de Canadiens qui faisaient un voyage de baseball : Fenway Park, Citizens Bank Park et Camden Yards. Après le match, nous avons fait un arrêt rapide au Xfinity live : un énorme bar situé à deux pas du stade. Nous y avons vu un bar énorme avec sections variés (danse, bar, restaurant, pub et terrasses) où les fans des équipes sportives de Philadelphie peuvent se retrouver après les matchs.

 

 

En gros, nous avons remarqué que lorsque les fans de ta ville sont des fans de sports, tes équipes vont toujours pouvoir survivre. Philadelphie est une ville fière de ses équipes : un des bars se nommait le broad street bullies ! De plus, en offrant aux fans des stationnements permettant la pratique du tailgaiting, on permet à ceux-ci de vivre une expérience différente et qui fera que ceux-ci vont se déplacer même lorsque l’équipe subi des revers.

Nous sommes très heureux de notre visite à Philadelphie et encore un gros merci à nos amis du tailgating! En plus, beaucoup de personne avant et après le match à qui nous avons parlé nous fortement encouragé dans notre projet et ils souhaitent un retour du baseball à Montréal. Nous espérons vraiment revivre ce genre de soirée lors du voyage!

 

Nous prenons congé pour la pause du match des étoiles, nous vous donnerons des nouvelles mais notre prochain arrêt sera notre retour à Washington le 18 Juillet!

P.S.  Nous avons finalement réussi à faire un échange de chandail! Un beau chandail des Phillies contre un des expos! Porte-le avec fierté!

After Pittsburgh and the PNC Park, we are driving back east to visit both teams of the Washington area: the Nationals and the Orioles. On our way, we stopped at Gettysburg, PA, to visit the biggest Battlefield of the American Civil War. The park surrounding the battlefield contains 13 000 plaques and monuments. You follow a path of 25 miles (with your car!) that presents you what happened there between July 1^st and July 3^rd 1863. At the end of the path, you can visit the cemetery where Abraham Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address.

 

The next day we arrived in Washington DC. There, we were received by Meg and Brian, a Nationals fan couple living in DC. They helped us getting around by car and by subway. They also offered us lodging for two nights! Washington is a great city to visit. First of all: almost everything is free to visit! Second of all: the variety of museums is huge: American history, air and space, holocaust memorial, art gallery, etc. Finally, we could visit many outdoors memorials that honor great Americans (Roosevelt, Luther King, and Lincoln) and past wars (WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War).

 

 

 

Before the game, we were meeting with Dany, an expos fan from Montreal who was doing a Washington\Baltimore baseball trip! We are not going to talk about our experience at the Nationals Park in this report because the game was postponed due to rain (after letting us waiting so the fans would buy food…). Hopefully, we were in good company. We met with Meg, Brian, David and Mark. All big Nationals fan and during the delay that explained us everything surrounding the Nats but we will talk about all of this when we will come back to Washington.

 

 

 

We then went back to Meg and Brian’s place to get a good night of sleep and to think of a way to come back to Washington during the trip. Next day we visited again Washington (so much to do) and we headed to Baltimore to meet again with Dany to visit Camden Yards together before the Orioles- Nationals game. Montreal should take example on Camden Yards for a new ballpark. First, the view is really important: we have a great view of downtown Baltimore that gives the fan a great experience. You can walk on a big alley that goes from center field to right field where you have food, shops and other attractions for the fans. The warehouse, longest building on the east coast, is an old red brick building that adds to the beauty of the ballpark. We also saw plates from some of the longest home runs at this park: one by Oh Henry Rodriguez himself! Inside, we had a great fan experience: easy to walk around and many things to do. The stadium employees were extra nice to us and many fans (more than in Washington!) recognize our Expos gear and stopped to talk with us.

 

 

We also met with David, who was at the Nationals Park the day before, so he could talk with us about the Orioles. David grew up as an Orioles fan but started to root for the Nationals when they arrived to Washington. Without a team in Washington when the Senators left, many people from the Washington area choose the Orioles. We had a special chance to see those two teams playing against each other. David told us that Orioles fans are real baseball fans and know their baseball history, which explained why so many people recognize us there. Those fans have to live with a difficult division playing against the Yankees and the Red Sox. They are really proud of their team and so many of them were showing the black and orange colors of the Birdland. A team with a great history, diehard fans and one of the most beautiful ballparks in the league = Recipe for great baseball experience.

 

 

Baseball talking, the Orioles pitchers had trouble giving home runs and walks to the Nationals players. At least, Many Machado gave us a little excitement going 3 for 4 and hitting a home run at left field. Leaving to many players on bases, the O’s dropped it 6-2 to the Nationals. Positive thing: it was free t-shirt day. A t-shirt honoring Nick Markakis, who’s playing with the team since 2006.

 

 

Even though the team lost, we were really happy to live this experience in Baltimore. We met many fans who told us they’d love to see a team back in Montreal. We can hope to live similar experiences in Montreal in a close future. Until then we recommend to everyone to take a weekend and go down to the Washington area to visit Washington DC and its museums and to drive to Baltimore to get an awesome baseball experience!

 

Since we wrote our website and ballgame dates on the car people stop us to talk about the tour even in traffic jams!

En route to Philadelphia!

P.S: We learned that the Star Spangled Banner was inspired by a victory against the British in Baltimore so when singing it at the ballpark, the fans Yells a big ‘O’ during the: Oh, say does that Star – Spangled Banner yet wave. It’s surprising but really nice to see.

 

 

Après Pittsburgh et le PNC Park, nous retournons vers la côte est afin de visiter les deux équipes de la région de Washington: les Nationals et les Orioles. En chemin, nous sommes arrêtés à Gettysburg pour visiter le plus grand champ de bataille de la guerre civile américaine. Le parc entourant la bataille contient plus de 13 000 plaques et momuments! On suit un chemin de 25 miles en voiture pour suivre l’évolution de la bataille du 1er au 3 juillet 1863. On termine avec le cimetière ou Abraham Lincoln a prononcé sa fameuse: ” Gettysburg Address ”.

 

Le lendemain, nous arrivions à Washington DC. Heureusement, Meg et Brian, un couple de Fan des Nationals, nous ont pris une passe de stationnement afin que nous puissions visiter Washington. De plus, ils nous offraient l’hébergement pour deux nuits! Washington est une ville passionnante à découvrir. Premièrement, presque tout est gratuit! Deuxièmement, la variété des musées est impressionnante: musée de l’histoire américaine, de l’air et de l’espace, de la culture native américaine, etc. Troisièmement, plusieurs monuments historiques situés autour du Mall nous permettent de prendre conscience des personnages et moments importants de l’histoire américaine: Lincoln, Roosevelt, et Luther King memorial en plus des monuments désiés aux guerres auquelles les États-Unis ont participées.

 

Nous devions rencontrer Dany avant le match, un fan des Expos de St-Julie qui faisaient un petit voyage de baseball Washington-Baltimore. Nous ne parlerons pas des Nationals et du Nationals park dans cette chronique, car vers 19h30, la pluie a tomber à torrent et le match n’a jamais lieu. Nous avons attendu jusqu’à 22h15 afin que l’on nous annonce que le match était reporté (le temps que les fans achètent de la nourriture dans les stands…). Heureusement, nous étions en compagnie de Meg, Brian, Mark et David: tous des fans des Nationals qui nous ont beaucoup parlé du baseball à Washington. Nous reviendrons sur ces discussions lors que nous reviendrons à Washington.

Nous sommes retournés chez Meg et Brian afin de passer une bonne nuit de sommeil et réfléchir à un plan pour revenir à Washington.  Nous avons continué à visiter Washington le lendemain avant de nous rendre à Baltimore pour rencontrer Dany de nouveau et visiter le Camden Yards pour un match Washington – Baltimore. Les fans de Montréal devraient s’inspirer du Camden Yards pour un futur stade à Montréal. Encore une fois, la vue sur le centre-ville est une caractéristique qui ajoute de la beauté au stade. On a créé une grande allée ouverte du champ centre au champ droit qui permet au fan de manger et de se promener tout en observant le stade. Le ”Warehouse”, vieux batîment qui ajoute un énorme cachet, est le plus long batîment sur la côte est américaine.  On y a aussi installer des plaques avec les plus longs coups de circuit à ce stade (l’un d’eux par Oh Henry Rodriguez!). À l’intérieur, on retrouve plusieurs attractions autant pour les adultes que pour les enfants. Les employés du stades étaient très sympathiques et plusieurs fans nous ont parlé de nos chandails des Expos (plus qu’à Washington!).

Nous avons parlé avec David, en fin de 7ième manche. David a grandi comme fan des Orioles mais est aussi devenu fan des Nationals lors de leur arrivée à Washington. Il nous explique que plusieurs personnes sont dans la même situation, n’ayant pas d’équipe à supporter à Washington après le deuxième départ des senators. Nous avions une rare chance de voir les deux équipes s’affronter dans ce match inter-ligues. David nous a aussi expliqué que les fans des Orioles connaissent très bien leur baseball et, donc, c’est pour cela que plusieurs personnes nous reconnaissent habillés en Expos. Ces fans doivent vivre avec une division difficile: Yankees et Red Sox. Ceux-ci sont fidèles à l’équipe et sont très bruyants lors des matchs. Les fans portaient presque tous le orange et noir du Birdland. Une équipe avec beaucoup d’histoire, des fans fidèles, un stade magnifique = la bonne recette du baseball.

Pour le match, les lanceurs des orioles se sont faits malmenés par les frappeurs des Nationals. Malgré cela, Manny Machado nous a fait plaisir avec une longue balle et en étant 3 en 4 au bâton. En laissant plusieurs coureurs sur les sentiers, les O’s ont échappé le match 6-2. Côté positif, c’était le jour du t-shirt gratuie, un t-shirt honorant la présence de Nick Markakis avec l’équipe depuis 2006.

Malgré ce résultat, nous sommes très heureux d’avoir vécu cette soirée à Camden en ayant rencontré plusieurs fans des O’s qui nous supporte afin de voir le retour du baseball à Montréal. Nous ne pouvons qu’espérer pouvoir vivre des expériences semblables à Montréal un jour! D’ici là, nous recommandons à tout le monde de descendre à Washington\Baltimore pour profiter des musées et pour passer une superbe soirée de baseball à Camden Yards!

En passant, depuis que nous avons écrit notre site et nos dates de matchs sur la voiture, les gens nous arrêtent et nous parlent même dans le traffic!

 

En route pour Philadelphie!

P.S: Le ”star spangled banner” aurait été écrit suite à une bataille à Baltimore. Les fans des O’s crient et font un mouvement des bras en O lors du: Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave. Ça surprend un peu mais c’est beau à voir!

 

 

After leaving the New York area, we rode west to Pennsylvania and the Pittsburgh Pirates. On the road, we decided to stop at a campground to sleep a little bit more comfortable, to take a shower and to do some Laundry! People around us at the campground were suprise to see our licence plate from Quebec. We don’t have a lot of material for camping (we still slept in the van) but we made the best out of it to have a good meal and to get some good sleep.

 

 

 

When we woke up, we took the road on the way to Pittsburgh thinking we would get there around 2 PM in time to visit the city a little before the 7 PM game. Listening to the radio, we heard some people speaking live from PNC park and we realized the game was actually at 1h35 PM! We hurried to get there in time and, hopefully, we parked and got to our seats before the first throw! Next time we will pay more attention to the schedule!

 

From our seats, we could confirm all the good words we had from baseball fan around the league about PNC park. First of all, the view of the downtown and the Allegheny river is astonishing. What a chance to have such a beautiful ball park and so close to downtown. The inside of the park is also really nice. Spiral footbrige to go to the upper levels gives the park more beauty.

 

 

For the game: Phillies vs Pirates, we could witness the return of A.J. Burnett against his last team: the Pirates. Fans gave him a nice welcome back when he got to the field. Jeff Locke was pitching for the Pirates and following an error from his 3rd baseman, he allowed a single that made it 1-0 for the Phillies. Phillies fan were really happy, they were hoping not to get sweep this weekend! The Pirates answered right back and Russell Martin (he played baseball in Montreal when he was in High School) pushed two runners to the plate with a solid double and the Pirates were leading 2-1. The Pirates defense did the rest of the work for the game and they had fun with their offense in the 8th: they produced 3 points one of wich by Russell who had been given an intentional walk. Final score 6-2 Pirates and we are now 2 and 2!

 

 

Bucs fans were really showing their colors in the ballpark. The team is still on their hype from last year after several difficult years: 4 years finishing last in their division from 2007 to 2010. Popular players like Gerrit Cole and Andrew McCutchen helps the team to get fans to the stadium. In a city with the famous Pittsburgh Steelers, we understand how the fans could have difficulty to live with a losing team. Still, people were really happy at the game and in this ‘Black and Yellow” culture, the fans are really attached to their teams. It’s really a city that can relate to his sports teams.

 

Tomorrow, day off and we are rolling to Washington et then Baltimore. They will play eachothers in the two games we will attend!

Après avoir quitté la grande région de New York, nous roulons vers la Pennsylvanie et les Pirates de Pittsburgh. En chemin, nous avons passé une nuit dans un camping afin de dormir plus calmement, de prendre une douche et de faire du lavage. Les gens étaient surpris de voir notre plaque d’immatriculation: Québec. Notre matériel de camping est modeste mais nous avons réussi à faire un bon repas et à passer une très bonne nuit.

 

 

À notre réveil, nous avons roulé vers Pittsburgh, anticipant arriver vers 14h pour visiter la ville avant le match de 19h. En route nous avons entendu  à la radio des animateurs qui étaient au PNC Park de Pittsburgh et nous avons réalisé que le match était à 13h35! Nous avons roulé très rapidement afin de réparer notre erreur et, heureusement, nous avons réussi à nous stationner et être à nos sièges avant le premier lancer! À l’avenir, nous allons être plus attentifs!

Assis à nos sièges, nous avons pu confirmer tous les bons commentaires qui nous avaient été dits sur le PNC Park. Premièrement, la vue magnifique sur la rivière Allegheny et sur la ville est époustouflante! Quel chance d’avoir un si beau stade si près du centre-ville. L’intérieur du stade est très joli. Des passerelles en colimaçon pour monter aux étages supérieurs ajoute au cachet du PNC Park.

Pour le match Pirates Phillies, nous avons eu droit au retour d’A.J. Burnett contre son ancienne équipe des Pirates. Les fans lui ont réservé un bel accueil. Jeff Locke lancait pour les Pirates et suite à une erreur de son troisième but, il a accordé un coup sur qui faisait 1-0 Phillies (au grand plaisir des nombreux partisans des Phillies qui voulaient éviter le balayage). La réplique fut immédiate et Russel Martin (qui a joué au baseball à Montréal dans sa jeunesse) poussa deux coureurs au marbre avec un solide double et les Pirates Menaient 2-1. La défense des pirates fit le reste du travail et en 8ième, l’attaque produisa 3 points dont un marqué par Russel à qui on avait donné un but sur balle intentionel. Résultat final 6-2 pirates et nous voilà avec 2 victoires et 2 défaites!

Les fans des Bucs étaient très présents dans le stade.  L’équipe est sur sa lancée de l’an dernier après des années très difficiles dont 4 ans à finir dernier de leur division de 2007 à 2010. Des joueurs très populaires comme Gerrit Cole et bien sur Andrew McCutchen aide l’équipe à satisfaire ses fans. Dans une ville qui abrite aussi les Steelers de Pittsburgh, on comprend que les fans peuvent avoir de la difficulté avec une équipe perdante. N’empêche que les gens étaient heureux au match et que cette ville à la culture ”Black and Yellow” aime ses équipes sportives. C’est une très belle culture du sport.

Demain, jour de congé et en route vers Washington et ensuite Baltimore qui joueront l’un contre l’autre lors des deux matchs!

After leaving the Bronx, we had a day off before visiting the other team in the New York area: the Mets. Violent thunderstorms and flash floods troubled our day off between the two games and we had to (already!) get the emergency fund to get a hotel room in New York so we don’t have to sleep in the van with water up to half our wheels in the New Jersey! We ran into some members of my family who offered us a good meal! Big thanks to them!

4^th of july: American independence day! Americans love this holiday and we tagged along (4^th of July beers!). In the morning we decided to visit New York. We both visited the city more than once so we decided to simply walk Central Park and Time square. What a city with the sky scrapers and the huge shops full of tourists every day of the year!

 

 

 

No rain in the morning but it started on our way to the Queens and the Citi Field. After we walked around the stadium to see pictures of Gary Carter and the Apple from the old stadium (a giant apple that comes out every time the Mets hits a home run). We met up with Gary and Shirley, a couple from Victoria (BC) who were visiting the Mets like us on the 4^th of July. They lived in Montreal years ago so they are Expos fans and, like us, they believe in the return of the Expos to Montreal.  They invited us to McFadden’s for a few beers (horrible service!) before the game. We had great baseball talks and they both encouraged us a lot in our project and it is really heartwarming to us. Gary said something that we will always remember during this trip: To the people that are calling me crazy for saying the Expos will be back in Montreal, I tell them that if I had told them, ten years ago, that Winnipeg would get a NHL team back, they would’ve called me crazy too.

 

 

After beers, we got into Citi Field and we went around visiting from the inside with Gary and Shirley. We saw pictures of Gary Carter and Cliff Floyd. We also saw the main entrance where you can see many pictures of Jackie Robinson when he first came to Brooklyn.   We never forget that the first place where Jackie Robinson played baseball in the same team as white players was in Montreal.

 

We then left Gary and Shirley to go up on the Promenade to get to our places. The weather was calm but there was a strong and really cold wind up there. People around us brought blankets! We had the chance to talk with fans who explained us the situation surrounding the Mets. The fans are more calm compare to their neighbors from the Bronx and they will show up to games just to get the stadium and the baseball experience. They still have that eternal hope for the return of the World Series. Funny thing, the fan we talked with was also at the game at Yankee Stadium July 2^nd as well as a family sitting in the row in front of us!

About Citi Field, people told us that the old Shea stadium was really too old and yes history and tradition are important but the cost of repairing was too high and they opted for a new stadium. The new stadium is really modern: elevators to get up on the promenade, the Jackie Robinson hall is really modern with videos and big stairwells, a huge selection of food and, apparently, very good! The Mets still kept enough history: the old home run apple in front of the stadiums, pictures of the 1986 year and visible metal structure that recalls the Queens Subway railway going above the streets. People told us that Gary Carter was the missing piece to the team so they could win the World Series of 86 and we’ve also been told that fans were really angry that he was getting in the hall of fame with the Expos logo. The Baseball hall of fame judged that his biggest impact on baseball was with the Expos.

 

 

Talking actual baseball, we had the chance to see Yu Darvish pitching for the Rangers. Both pitchers had a rough night: the Mets pitcher gave a home run to the first batter and had to leave the game after being hit by a liner. Darvish also gave a home run to the Mets making it 3-1 Mets. The rangers tied it up 4-4. At this moment Gary and Shirley gave us their tickets that were closer to the field so we could get a better view at the end of the game. It was really nice of you guys, so great meeting you and we hope to see you in Seattle .A deep double in right field pushed two runners to the home plate and the Mets were leading 6-4 at the bottom of the 8^th inning. Rangers got closer in the 9^th but couldn’t get the tying run so the Mets won it 6-5! Our first win of the tour (1-2).

 

 

After the game, there was a special fireworks show presented by the Mets. We were really excited because from our promenade seats we could see fireworks in the surrounding area during the game. It was late but a big majority of the fans stayed for the show. It was a great music and fireworks presentation and it was perfect to end our day in the New York area.

 

People seem to forget about the New York Mets. This team has seen so much history and is closely related to the Expos (last game of the Expos was at the old Shea Stadium). The fans at the game were having a blast by cheering for the team during the whole game and we did the wave several times! Fans were also paying interest to the actual game. If you are thinking about going to see baseball in the United States, consider going to Citi Field to live a nice experience and it is so close to Montreal.

Next stop is Pittsburgh and the PNC Park (3 down 27 to go)

P.S: when they are throwing t-shirts in the stands, watch out not to get yourselves two rows down like it did!

Après avoir quitté le Bronx, nous avions un jour de congé avant d’aller visiter l’autre équipe de la région de New York : les Mets de New York. Des pluies violentes ont troublées notre journée de congé entre les deux matchs et nous avons (déjà!) sorti le fond d’urgence pour passer une nuit à l’hôtel à New York pour éviter de passer une autre nuit dans la mini van avec la chaleur et les inondations. Par hasard nous avons croisé des membres de ma famille qui nous ont offert un bon repas, nous les remercions!

4 juillet : Joyeux jour de l’indépendance américaine! Les américains fêtent en grand et nous avons décidé d’en profiter! Le matin nous avons visité un petit peu New York. Les deux l’ayant déjà visité à plus d’une reprise, nous nous sommes limités à se promener à central park et time square. Quelle ville passionnante avec ses gratte-ciels et ses énormes boutiques!

 

Nous avons échappé à la pluie le matin mais en route pour le Queens et le citi field nous avons été rattrapés par la celle-ci. Après avoir marché autour du stade pour voir des photos de Gary Carter et la grosse pomme de l’ancien Shea stadium (une pomme géante qui sort à chaque coup de circuit des Mets), nous avons rencontré Gary et Shirley, un couple de Victoria (C-B) qui visitait les Mets comme nous en ce 4 Juillet. Ayant vécu à Montréal, ils étaient des supporters des expos et croient en un retour comme nous! Ils nous ont invité à prendre une bière au Pub McFadden’s (service horrible!) pour discuter baseball. Ils nous ont beaucoup encouragé dans notre projet et je retiens une phrase de Gary de cette rencontre : Les gens qui disent que je suis fou quand je leur dit que les Expos vont revenir à Montréal, je leur réponds que si j’avais dit, il y a 10 ans, que Winnipeg reverrait du hockey de la NHL dans sa ville, on m’aurait dit que je suis fou.

Après, nous avons fait le tour du stade à l’intérieur avec Gary et Shirley pour voir d’autres hommages à Gary Carter et Cliff Floyd. Sans oublier la rotonde dédié à Jackie Robinson : Photos de son arrivée à Brooklyn, vidéos le montrant avec les dodgers, etc. Nous n’oublions jamais que Jackie Robinson a commencé à jouer au baseball professionnel dans une ligue avec des joueurs blancs à Montréal.

Nous nous sommes séparés pour rejoindre nos sièges respectifs. La température s’est calmée mais sur la promenade au haut du stade il y avait un fort vent qui était très froid. Nous avons discuté avec un fan des Mets qui  nous a expliqué la situation entourant les ceux-ci. Les fans sont fidèles à l’équipe et sont plus modérés que leurs voisins du Bronx. On parle du ‘’eternal hope’’ des fans pour une série mondiale. Les gens vont vivent l’expérience du stade et du baseball peu importe. Étonnamment, ce fan était au Yankee stadium le 2 juillet en même temps que nous de même qu’une famille assise devant nous.

Pour le stade, on nous a dit que le vieux Shea stadium était complètement désuet. Oui l’histoire est importante mais à un certain moment les coûts d’entretien n’en valent plus la peine. Le stade est très actuel : ascenseur pour monter sur la promenade, la rotonde Jackie Robinson très moderne, une sélection de nourriture très variée et, apparemment, de bonne qualité, etc. Les Mets ont quand même conservé un style qui rappelle le Queens : poutres métalliques visibles, une nouvelle pomme pour les coups de circuit, des images de l’année 1986, etc. On nous a aussi dit que Gary Carter fut la pièce manquante, à son arrivée avec les Mets, pour remporter la série mondiale. On nous a aussi dit à quel point les fans des Mets étaient en colère lorsqu’il fut intronisé au temple de la renommée avec le logo des Expos et non celui des Mets. Même sans avoir gagné de série mondiale, le temple de la renommée juge que son plus grand impact sur le baseball fut avec les Expos.

Pour le match, nous avions la chance de voir Yu Darvish lancer pour les Rangers (beacoup de fan des Rangers présents!). Les deux lanceurs n’ont pas eu un grand match : le lanceur des mets a quitté en première manche, atteint par une flèche et après avoir donné un coup de circuit au premier frappeur. Darvish aussi a donné un coup de circuit qui faisait 3-1 pour les Mets. Après que les rangers aient créé l’égalité 4-4, un profond double au champ droit a permis au Mets de prendre l’avance 6-4 en 8^ième manche. C’est à ce moment que Gary et Shirley nous ont donné leurs billets qui étaient très bien placés au niveau du terrain pour que nous puissions finir le match plus près des joueurs! Un énorme merci à eux, quelle belle rencontre et on espère vous revoir à Seattle! Les Ranges se sont approchés 6-5 en 9^ième mais la victoire est allé au Mets! Notre première victoire de la tournée (1-2).

 

Après le match, nous avons eu le droit à une présentation de feu d’artifices au Citi field pour célébrer le 4 juillet! Déjà que nous voyions du stade les feux des villes avoisinantes, nous étions très excités. Une très belle présentation musique et feux d’artifices. Les fans sont restés en grand nombre malgré l’heure tardive. Cela finissait très bien notre journée à New York.

Parfois les gens semblent oublier les Mets de New York. Cette équipe qui a tant d’histoire relié au Expos (le dernier match des Expos fut au Shea Stadium) et qui a vu tant d’histoire au vieux Shea Stadium. Les fans au match avaient vraiment l’air de s’amuser : encouragement tout le match, nous avons fait la vague plusieurs fois et les gens portaient attention au match. Lorsque vous pensez aller voir du baseball aux États-Unis, considérez d’aller au Citi Field pour y vivre une belle expérience de baseball pas très loin de Montréal!

P.S. : Faites attention lorsqu’on lance des t-shirts dans les estrades afin de ne pas vous retrouvez deux rangées plus bas comme moi!

After leaving Fenway Park on July first, we slept a few hours to drive down to New York to go see the Yankees play the Tampa bay Rays at the Yankee Stadium. To se Fenway and the Yankee stadium in less then 24 hours is pour us one of the best moment of our life! In New York, we met up with Marie-Joelle Parent working for the Journal de Montreal ( Article in french right here ). She interviewed us and walked us to the Yankee Stadium with an unbearable heat!

The new Yankee stadium is a really balance stadium.Explaining, we can find all the history and the old school baseball as much as the the new contemporary style. The first thing that we saw was that the stadium is really ”open” even when you are inside on the upper decks. Large walking paths and big openings on the outside let us breath easily. We can see all the great players that played for that historic franchise: Berra, Gehrig, Ruth Mantle, Jeter, etc. We feel the pride of the fans going back to the roots of the club, a pride that we can compare to the one of the Montreal Canadiens fans.

 

 

s speech at the old Yankee stadium. What a great souvenir! We then encounter Chris, a P.E teacher from the New York area that visited 23 out of the 30 MLB ballparks in his life. We talked a lot about baseball and hockey! (Chris is a Rangers fan and he attended the famous habs-rangers comeback in Montreal). Chris was really nice to us and we wish him good luck to on his missing 7 ballparks! We love when people come and talk to us because we are wearing expos gear, every baseball fan has a special story about the expos!

 

We got lucky because our places in the Grand Stand were in the shadow. The thermometer showed around 90 degrees at our places! Even though, we realized that it looked like there were no bad seats in the Yankee Stadium. The people in the bleachers were having a blast and even from the last row of the grand stand you had a great view of the game.

 

 

 

Talking baseball: the full roster of the Yankees was not on the field: Ellsbury and Teixeira were missing but what a pleasure it is to see play Ichiro Suzuki, Alfonso Soriano and not forgetting Derek Jeter, the captain, who is playing his last year in baseball. He will probably be an early candidate to the baseball hall of fame. Yankees started strong : home run by the first hitter (Brett Gardner). It seemed like the Yankees stopped playing in the 4th inning and the Rays got away with the win 6-3é

 

So many people trash talk about the Yankees and their fans. Yes the food is expensive (people in front of us payed 86$ for their meal!), Yes the team offer players big contract to bring them to New York but when you are sitting at the New Yankee stadium, all of this doesn’t matter because of the beauty of the game and the ballpark. We got a good price for the tickets, people surrounding us payed attention to the game, even for an afternoon game with a high temperature! Our opinion about the Yankees is that they have to live to the rhythm of New York: everything goes fast, everything is expensive, people are impatient (not you Chris!) but when the umpire yells: Play ball and in the end you can hear Fran Sinatra singing New York New York, you understand that you are in front of 27 championships and a place that have seen the some of the greatest players in history!

 

 

PS: walking New York we saw a guy wearing an expos hat! I feel it, the team is coming back my friends!
